The garburator
In the early 1970s my family’s kitchen was remodeled and a garburator / garbage disposal unit was installed in the kitchen sink to grind up and flush away food waste. It seems like a very 1970s thing, like avocado green appliances, or geometric shaped wallpaper, or pet rocks and chia pets. Do they still exist? Are they even legal now? I’ve heard contradictory stories. Some report garburators in their homes to this day. Some say that the City allows them, but discourages them. Some report that they are illegal under Provincial law. These various accounts lead me to think that no one really knows what they’re talking about. (By itself, that’s pretty normal.)
Mom seemed to like the garburator, but I was never a fan. I never stopped worrying about losing my fingers, and I disregarded it. It was a lot easier and simpler to throw food waste onto a compost heap in the garden, which we also did.
The garburator made a lot of noise as its motor turned the blades that mulched up food waste, like a motorcycle engine revving, or something.
