The kitchen pump
When I was growing up in the 1970s, I used to visit my grandparents in the village of Cannington, Ontario, near the city of Lindsay, north of Toronto. In the early 70s they still had an old-fashioned hand pump in their kitchen. My brothers and I thought that was so neat. Whenever we visited, we made a beeline to their kitchen to play with the pump. It was a kind of race: the first one to pump the handle and draw water was the winner. The water was very cold. Eventually, they had modern plumbing installed. Ever afterwards we missed that pump. Sometimes we still talk about it.
