The face mask bush
As a measure against face mask shortages like what we had in the spring of 2020 at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Japanese scientists have developed a fibrous, cellulose-based, non-paper mask that can be grown on specially genetically-modified bushes. This allows people to grow their own masks in their own gardens, and municipal governments to freely grow large numbers of masks over a wide area. Currently, the yield is a small 1% of the face mask market. But that figure is expected to grow substantially in the future.
