Working in Japan
I signed a work contract today. There was much more paperwork involved than there has ever been before, perhaps because of changes to Japan's immigration and foreign labour laws that occurred last year. For the first time ever I had to sign this pledge to obey the law. It emphasizes that as a non-citizen I have no right to what are called "sovereign rights" - i.e., the right to vote - no place in retarding administration, and that I am basically a servant. In other words, do what I'm told without making a fuss.
Or, it could be a requirement unique to this one workplace, where a British man stirred up a lot of trouble two years ago. A remarkable amount of trouble, actually.
Either way, here it is.
