The Globe Tokyo
On Sunday, February 14, 2021, I went to photograph The Globe Tokyo stage theater, adjacent to the Yamanote Line train tracks between Shin-Okubo Station and Takadanobaba Station. I got off at Shin-Okubo and then walked a few minutes north. It was a good stroll, and it was easy.
The Globe Tokyo opened in 1988 to showcase local and international productions of Shakespeare's plays. I've been looking at it from the passing train for years and admired its external appearance and colour. Finally, the only way to accomplish the idea of snapping pictures of it was to actually go there in person.
Sadly, though, because of the crush of surrounding urban development it is flat-out impossible to get a good shot of the building. I suspect the view I hoped for is only available from a balcony on one of the nearby condominium towers.
I am surprised - and a little annoyed - how many foreigners that I mention it to have never heard of The Globe Tokyo. I think, what the hell!, it’s plainly visible right there next to the train tracks. What have these long-term resident foreigners I know been doing, and been looking at all these years? What have they been doing with their eyes? Jeez!!
