Canadian citizen
I have an American acquaintance in Tokyo from Buffalo, New York. He has many relatives - aunts, uncles and cousins - in Ontario, and he has often boasted that he has dual U.S.-Canadian citizenship through his parents. I don't know the details. But recently he decided to become solely Canadian and give up his U.S. citizenship and passport. He did the paperwork and has received his Canadian Citizenship Certificate, which seems to disqualify his previous claims to having dual-citizenship. Maybe he meant that he felt he had it, but technically he did not. Oh, well. But he's Canadian now, despite still having to apply for a passport.
I don't see him regularly, but when we met in mid-June at a work site his first words of greeting were, "You'll have to tell me how to be a Canadian." I was aware of his disposition towards citizenship, so I understood his meaning right away. Immediately, without missing a beat I said,
* drink lots of coffee;
* eat lots of doughnuts; and,
* ignore everyone.
For good or bad, that sort of sums up my experience of my countrymen.
Maybe I’m wrong.
