Setsubun
Today is the annual Setsubun, Bean Throwing Festival in Japan. Setsubun is a ritualistic exorcism of the home in the new year to drive out the bad spirits of the old year and invite the good spirits of the new year, timed to coincide with the Chinese Lunar New Year.
It's usually observed by families with small children. In the evening father will wear a cheap paper demon mask (for sale in convenience stores), while the child pelt him with dried, baked soy beans and shouting "Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi!" ("Demon out! Good luck in!") That ritual is called "mamemaki," literally "bean throwing."
