Musical instruments
Many youngsters are enrolled by their parents in piano lessons. Mine didn't, but in elementary school I asked for a trumpet after seeing a quartet with a horn. By middle school I gave it up. But then in middle age I returned to music as a hobby, playing a different instrument.
I hated playing recorder in elementary school. First of all, I couldn't do it because I didn't know what the hell I was doing. So, I faked it as cleverly as I could and hoped my teachers wouldn't notice. Second, because I thought they were filthy things, slobbered on by the mouths of umpteen other children. I remember playing rhythm sticks in the young elementary grades. My favorites were the ribbed sticks because they made a more interesting sound, and they felt more interesting against the skin of my palms.
