Sagamihara massacre
This is the newspaper for Wednesday, July 27, 2016 featuring front page news of the deadly knife attack at a residence for mentally disabled people in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, committed by a 26-year-old former employee on Tuesday, July 26th. The print newspaper remains my primary source of news, and this news was not in Tuesday 26th’s newspaper because it happened so late - around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26th - much too late to make the morning newspapers. The morning newspapers go to press around midnight.
I woke up on Tuesday 26th and learned about the massacre from the American Armed Forces Radio Network radio station in Japan, called "Eagle 8-10" (because it is found at 81.0 megahertz on the AM dial). Also sometimes called “AFN” Radio, for Armed Forces Radio. After that I watched Japanese TV and read reports on the Internet, including Facebook links to news stories.
Because of tight gun control in Japan murders are usually committed with knives or with household poisons. It`s a cultural thing: Americans use guns; Japanese use blades. Not always, of course, but more often than not.
