Fatal Accident
There was a fatal accident today on the Odakyu Line, between Sagami-Ono Station and Sobudai-mae Station, west of central Tokyo. It is the nearest station to the U.S. military's Camp Zama. I was in Ebina between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., which was exactly in the middle of the section of the line that was suspended and exactly in the middle of the period of suspension. I had to stand around (no space to sit) for an hour before the trains started moving again. It took me over half an hour to discover online the reason for the disruption. I hope it wasn't a young person who died. Today is cloudy but mild. Yesterday was sunny and mild. Spring is in the air. These are not days for young people to die. On the other hand, it's the season of Entrance Examinations, and young people are under a lot of pressure. Sobudai-mae Station is quite close to Seijogakkuen-mae, which is named for its proximity to the nearby Seijo University. It's sad to think that somebody woke up this morning on this mild day - maybe looking forward to the rest of their life - and just a few hours later was crushed to death by an Odakyu Line train. They didn't know that when they woke up and ate breakfast, the train that would shortly kill them was already on the move, and every second was bringing the two - victim and train - closer to their rendezvous. I hope it wasn't a young person.
