Set in the year 2242 A.D., Breach is a poor-looking Alien rip-off. Earth is suffering an extinction level event. 300,000 survivors are selected to board a spaceship called the Ark which will take them to a new colony called New Earth. Noah (Cody Kearsley) stows away on the Ark impersonating a junior janitor while his pregnant girlfriend Hayley (Kassandra Clementi) is put into stasis as a passenger. Noah’s boss is a disgraced veteran soldier, Clay Young (Bruce Willis). In the course of the voyage to New Earth, a parasite alien is discovered onboard, introduced by dissidents who object to humanity finding a new cosmic home, believing, instead, that we deserve extinction for the sins of our species. The security breach is inadequately explained. How did the organism get aboard? Exactly who brought it aboard, and how?
Led by the tough guy Clay, the crew fight back. The alien organism invades the body and kills the host, but keeps the host’s body so they can have a form synchronous to their spaceship environment. That means they look and act like traditional Hollywood zombies. But it’s not a zombie movie.
When Clay and Noah and a few other crewmen cotton on to the problem they quickly learn that gunfire doesn’t stop the aliens. As a movie viewer, firing guns inside a spacecraft looks really stupid to me. And where is the gravity coming from that allows everyone to maneuver around the ship like it was a movie set on Earth, or something? When they learn that gunfire doesn’t kill them, the crew switch to flamethrowers. That’s why I called it an Alien rip-off, because hunting the alien with flamethrowers is exactly what Ripley’s crew did about the Nostromo spacecraft in Alien (1979). Again, as a movie viewer, using flamethrowers inside a space ship looks like a stupidly bad idea to me.
I almost stopped watching out of boredom, but I stuck it out.
My favorite line is, “We are here to hunt, we are here to kill, we are here to survive.” Tough guy talk.
Is Bruce Willis doing B movies now?
