Lonely Hearts
starring John Travolta, James Dandolfini, Jared Leto, Salma Hayek, Scott Caan and Laura Dern
written and directed by Todd Robinson
John Travolta has appeared in some real clunker films. And he has also appeared in some of the best you might watch. When he is on the ball he’s a genius and, as I have written before, John Travolta is arguably the coolest man in the universe after David Carradine. Lonely Hearts is one of Travolta’s good products - real good, so go out and rent it. Now! It’s a film noir 1940’s-era homicide police detective story. A middle aged police detective with a dysfunctional family life pursues a male-female couple of “lonely heart” serial killers - murderers who find their victims through match-making adds - hence they are dubbed “lonely hearts” killers - much like some people today prey on victims through Internet chat rooms They lure lonely, affluent women into a trap, kill them and take their money. There are some grisly murder scenes here, kind of disturbing to watch. But most disturbing of all, I guess, was the very dramatic execution by electrocution scene of the pair right at the very end of the film. It was so cool I kept rewinding to watch it again (and again and again)!
