Despite the Great East Japan Earthquake of one year ago I am happy to be living here. There are advantages and disadvantages of every place, and I am not always a happy foreigner here. But the March 11 disasters revealed Japan to the world as the land of the calm, the steadfast, the united; the land the of big heart and the strong. It’s the land of the living who deserve to celebrate themselves.

I expected the Readers in Council page today might feature a whole page of letters commenting on and commemorating the first anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. But no. Of the five letters printed today mine was the only letter on that topic. Of course, today’s paper was extra thick as it contained several pages of articles about the earthquake, its aftermath and the ongoing recovery and reconstruction.
