Academy Awards
The 79th annual Academy Awards recently occurred in Hollywood, California (February 25t, 2007). The Best Picture and Best Director awards went to Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, the most prominent American director of his generation not to have received an Oscar. Well, now he has. The Best Actor Oscar went to Forest Whitaker to his portrayal of 1970s Ugandan dictator Idi Amin Dada in The Last King of Scotland. I remember when Idi Amin was at his peak, killing people left and right until Tanzania put a stop to his terror by invading its northern neighbor. In any event, I dislike Forest Whitaker as an actor. He is dull and talentless, and he spoils everything he touches, much like Catherine Zeta-Jones does.
I know these tidbits of Hollywood news, and more besides, just by reading the newspaper, because the Academy Awards spill over into the mainstream news. But the truth is that I have not watched an Academy Awards show in about 27 years. Similarly, I have not seen an Olympic Games on television in 31 years (since Montrealin 1976). In the same vein, I have never seen an American Football Superbowl. I have never watched a soccer match or baseball game, let alone a World Cup event or the World Series. I have never watched a tennis open, and much more. What’s the point?
